SCOTLAND

Scotland is a land of mountains and lakes with a population of about five milions.

“Men in Skirts”

The kilt is a piece of clothing wihich many Scottish men wear on special occasions.
Tartan is the name of the typical coloured pattern; different tartans are connected with differents Scottish families or clans such as the Stewart tartan and the Macdonald tartan.

Pipers -the men who play the traditional Scottish musical intrument the bagpipes- usually wear kilts and sporrans.

Food:

The most famous Scottish food is haggis. This consisit of a sheep's stomach which is packed with bits of meat, onion, oats, spices and salt. Robert Burns wrote about how hagis is in a famous poem. Porridge is another typical Scottish dish. Scotland is also well-known for its very good Aberdeen Angus beef and salmon.

Iconic Places:

Edinburh is the capital of Scotland and is very popular with tourist, who come to see the Castle and the famous streets such as Princes Street and the Royal Mile. Every August, the Edinburgh Festival takes place.
The Scottish Highlands are the mountains and valleys in the northern half ot the country. Loch Lomond is the largest lake in Scotland and Loch Ness is the most famous.

Glasgow and Aberdeen are other Scottish cities. Alberdeen is the centre of the North Sea oil industry and Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland.

Iconic creatures:

The Loch Ness Monster is the most famous inhabitant of Scotland. There is a legend thath Saint Columba saw a “water-beast” in the sixth century near Loch Ness.

Dolly the sheep is another famous Scottish animal, she was cloned at a scientific institute near Edinburh.

Iconic People:

William Wallace and Robert the Bruce were two great Scottish heroes who fought for independence from England in the Middle Ages.
Mary Queen of Scots had a dramatic and very sad life. She was crowned Queen of Scots when she was a baby.

Rober Burns is Scotlan'd national poet, another famous people like: Alexander Bell, James Watt, Alexander Fleming were from Scotland.

Sport:

Glasgow has the 2 best-known Scottish football teams, Rangers and Celtics. Sir Alex Ferguson is Scottish. Golf is another popular sport, while in the winter you can go skiing in the Highlands. The Highland Games is a typical Scottish sporting event, you have to be very strong and skilled to win this competition.

Celebrations:

New Year is more important than Christmas in Scotland. The Scottish have a special celebration on 31th December known as “Hogmanay”.

Burns Night takes place on the birthday of Robert Burns. People read poems and sing songs by Burns.
